Skills Base

The Institute’s interest in the interdisciplinary nature of effective rural development has resulted in skills grouped in a number of themes;
  • social; including economics, education, health, vocational training, marketing and rural credit,
  • biophysical, including soils water, plants, livestock and investigations leading to better utilisation of these, and
  • institutional; legal, governance, policy and strategy formulation, monitoring & evaluation and review.

This experience has resulted in the development of a network of like minded senior practitioners, researchers, academics and public servants with varied skills and experience.

The Institute's policy of retaining both proven and experienced consultants is a principal means of quality control. The Institute also operates a system of peer review to facilitate common standards among its members and staff and has a policy of 'mentoring' promising junior professionals to assist them in making the transition to senior status.

The Institute is experienced in all stages of the project cycle from identification through preparation, implementation and evaluation and looks for opportunities to follow an idea or concept through as many of these stages as possible in the interests of success.
