2001 : Catchment Management Seminar for the Mekong River Commission (MRC)Back to Newsletters OnlineIID was contracted to prepare and deliver a Catchment Management Seminar for the Mekong River Commission (MRC) Secretariat staff as part of the planning stage for a MRC State of the Basin Report intended to an annual report for publication on the MRC web site. The report was to be the annual report by the Secretariat for the member states and the public. IID was then asked to review the parts of the report related to catchment management, agriculture irrigation and forestry prior to publication and mounting on the MRC web site. IID was contracted to prepare and deliver a seminar paper to a joint MRC CGIAR seminar to identify areas of cooperation between MRC and CGIAR member institutions. The particular subjects covered included the need for cooperation in the area of collaborative research into Water Use Efficiency, part of the AIFP strategy developed in 2000 (see 2000 newsletter). This resulted in a new research activity for MRC and details can be seen at: http://www.mrcmekong.org/news_events/press_release/2003/press04.htm. IID Chief Executive Officer was contracted as a public intellectual to be a speaker and panel member at the 2001 Adelaide Festival of Ideas. The subject of the address presented was "Salt of the Earth. Water - Salt and the limits of growth" Details can be seen at: http://www.adelaidefestival.org.au/ideas/2003/index.asp. IID was contracted to review of the use of halophytes for oil field remediation, concentration of saline drainage water and use with treated effluent water for public amenity areas in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Texas, Arizona, California & Mexico and to attend a salinity conference at US Salinity Lab, Riverside California. IID was contracted to study the implications of relocating the Mekong River Commission headquarters from Phnom Penh to Vientiane. Activities involved interviews and evaluation of national and donor viewpoints in visits to Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia.
